A Hug From The Art World is pleased to present Steven Cox

DANCE BETWEEN THE RAINDROPS

The exhibition will be on view at A Hug From The Art World, 515 West 19th Street, New York, NY,

10011 from March 11th to April 2nd, 2022. The gallery will stay open late for a reception on March 17th through 8pm.

Dance Between The Raindrops features a series of new abstract paintings by Scottish artist Steven

Cox. The works exhibited are as much paintings as they are the results of studio based

performance. The works get their titles from songs by Fatboy Slim ‘Praise You’, The Kinks' ‘You

Really Got Me’ and The Kings Of Leon ‘Revelry’ amongst others.

Electric color emerges from behind a distinctive transferal painting method, that comes after,

enabling the artist to explore and mine his abstract painterly language. The paintings come into

being when the artist’s hands are used to tear away a thickly applied film of paint that is adhered

to the surface of the canvas. The painting becomes activated when the paint is transferred from

one surface to another, imprinting what once had been rhythmic gestures.

Borrowing from Richard Serra in technique with his works on paper and interplaying that with a

spraying technique akin to Sterling Ruby, Cox’s duality in method and approach causes the viewers

gaze to oscillate all over the pictorial surface at high frequency. The visual experience is reminiscent

of the rhythmic motions of how the works were created in the first place.

Cox’s approach therefore combines historical and contemporary methods. Bridging techniques,

color and sound prove vital in the endless possibilities that are achieved within his genre of

abstraction. Through this exhibition, Cox pays tribute to his unending desire to further push the

boundaries of material language, inviting the viewer to consider a phenomenological interpretation

that exceeds the traditional scope of visual perception.
