A Hug From The Art World is pleased to present Sarah Aibel’s debut solo exhibition, I Quit.

The exhibition will be on view from September 23 through October 16, 2021 at the High Line Nine exhibition space in Chelsea (507 W 27th Street / 508 W 28th Street).

Aibel’s work, all glazed stoneware, delves into the semiotic tradition of what it is to “work”, taking its point

of departure as that age-old symbol of the working world: the briefcase. Through the framework of the

briefcase, Aibel explores what it means to work. What signifies work? What symbols communicate

working? Is work gendered? How are work and worth related? As a mother and an artist, Aibel doesn’t

drive to an office, carry a briefcase, stamp a time card or have a business phone number.

“My studio had become a respite for me from the pressures of a job that is almost always taken for

granted and not really considered a job in the traditional sense - Motherhood,” Aibel says. “I would

escape into the clay and lose myself making, at first, escape cases. A fantasy of grabbing and going,

something I could no longer do in responsible reality, was suddenly at my fingertips. Adventures were

taken, dangers faced, research accomplished, worlds unfurled. My studio was the place I could go to quit

the job that wasn’t even a job and explore alternate identities.”
