A Hug From The Art World is pleased to announce In Unison
Brandon Deener’s first New York solo exhibition.
The exhibition opens on Thursday, March 9th, with a reception from 6–8 PM, and will be on view through Saturday, April 22nd, at 515 West 19th Street, New York, NY 10011.
In Unison presents thirteen new paintings and works on paper highlighting the artist’s amplified style of figuration. From the families in Summoned By Hickory Smoke to a portrait of legendary composer, Isaac Hayes, Deener’s signature elongation of his subjects’ necks lends them a regal dignity. In an Afro-Futuristic context, the elongated necks convey clarity of vision, both spiritually and intellectually.
Deener incorporates a musical background into his self-taught practice, believing in its ability to “bring people together. Much like good food.” Musically, In Unison refers to one note played in different octaves simultaneously. Group paintings like Family Vacation, Mightier than the Sword, and Who’s the Leader? echo this sentiment, their subjects’ distinct expressions forming a single collective mood, or tone. Deener’s solo portraits convey unique visual octaves as well. Each communicates a related frequency of vibration, forming one collective, piercing gaze. Memphis, the artist’s hometown, provides the backdrop of art, music, and good food against which his perspectives flourish.
Brandon Deener (b. 1982, Memphis, TN) is an artist living and working in Los Angeles.
